Williams was born on April 10th, 1954, in Colon, Panama. He is the child of Alma Geraldine and Rogelio Williams, alongside his brother and sister. Juan migrated to America with his mother and siblings in a banana carrier when he was four. They lived in Pleasantville, New Jersey, for a short while before moving to Brooklyn, New York, where they settled permanently.

Shortly after moving to New York, the reputable writer earned a scholarship to study at Oakwood Friends School, a private institution. Williams revealed that attending a private school as a teenager positively impacted him. While there, he was a student clerk and the school newspaper editor and played sports.
