Rivera became famous after he covered The Mystery of Al Capone’s Vaults, a 1986 live T.V. special. Early life

Rivera was born in New York City but grew up in Brooklyn and West Babylon with his four siblings. Growing up in a racially prejudiced era, his mother felt the need to change his surname to Riviera to reduce potential bigotry. The eminent actor had a Puerto Rican father who worked as a cab driver and a Jewish mother who worked in a restaurant. Although his father was Catholic, Rivera was primarily raised as Jewish and even had a bar mitzvah.

Education

As an average student, Geraldo Rivera attended West Babylon High School. Thanks to his high school principal, who encouraged him to attend college, he was enrolled at the State University of New York Maritime College. After freshman year, he quit the course and transferred to the University of Arizona. The acclaimed journalist graduated in 1965 with a bachelor of science in business administration.

In 1966, he started pursuing law at Brooklyn Law School. While there, Geraldo interned for the New York County District Attorney. He graduated at the top of his class in 1969 with a Juris Doctor. Afterwards, Rivera was admitted to the New York State Bar.

Rivera is a renowned journalist, attorney, author, and co-host of The Five on Fox News Channel. As a young attorney, Rivera worked with several organizations such as the National Lawyers Guild, Manhattan-based Community Action for Legal Services and the New York City Chapter of the Young Lords. His work with the last of these attracted the attention of the WABC-TV news director, who offered him a job as a news reporter. However, he had to attend a journalism summer program due to his lack of journalistic experience.

In 1970, the famous correspondent was hired as a reporter for ABC News Eye Witness. 2 years later, Rivera uncovered Willowbrook State School’s neglect and abuse of intellectually disabled patients, which got the nation’s attention and earned him a Peabody Award. Also, the celebrity served as a correspondent for ABC News for shows such as 20/20 and stayed with ABC until 1985. This was when he was fired after criticizing ABC News president for refusing to air a story on the relationship between the late John F. Kennedy and well-liked actress Marilyn Monroe.

Rivera founded Maravilla Productions and produced for programs such as Good Night America. The program aired from 1974 to 1977 and covered controversial topics such as the use of marijuana. Thanks to his rising career in television news, the prominent reporter covered The Mystery of Al Capone’s Vaults, Al Capone being a notorious Chicago mobster. Geraldo had an audience of over 30 million viewers and was utterly embarrassed when the vaults were discovered with nothing in them. Despite this, it was a positive turning point for his career.

Geraldo Rivera won three Robert F. Kennedy journalism awards and three Scripps Howard Foundation awards. He has received more than 170 journalism awards, including the George Foster Peabody Award. Apart from these, he has three national and seven local Emmys and two Columbia-Dupont awards.
